The Los Angeles Chargers got better on both sides of the ball this offseason, bringing in two stud defenders in Khalil Mack and J.C. Jackson while retaining free agent wide receiver Mike Williams. Clearly, the franchise believes in quarterback Justin Herbert, as they have made it a priority to build the best possible team around the talented signal-caller. However, Los Angeles still has work to do with the 2022 NFL Draft coming up. With the 17th pick, the Chargers will have their pick of some of the better prospects. Los Angeles could use an offensive tackle to ensure that Herbert is protected well. The franchise could also opt to add to positions of strength by selecting a wide receiver or pass rusher, depending on who is available. That said, here are the three best players the Chargers can select in the NFL Draft.

3 Best Players The Chargers Can Select With 17th Pick In NFL Draft

3. Kyler Gordon

The Chargers brought in J.C. Jackson to lead the cornerback room, but one can never have too many at such a key position. Los Angeles can count on Jackson and Asante Samuel Jr., but there are question marks behind those two. Michael Davis earned just a 54.0 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, which is certainly not good enough for a third corner. Enter Gordon, who is capable of playing in any scheme and has the size at 6-foot and 200 pounds to cover any receiver who lines up across from him. Gordon just so happened to grade out at a 90.9 in man coverage, per Pro Football Focus, which was the highest mark in the nation. In a division loaded with talented signal-callers and high-octane passing attacks, the Chargers would boast perhaps the division's best trio of cornerbacks in Jackson, Samuel and Gordon.

2. Jordan Davis

The Chargers would seem to be set in terms of their pass rush, with Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack set to rush off the edges. However, Los Angeles allowed the third-most rushing yards per game and has struggled to defend the ground game for the last couple of seasons. The team brought in free agent Austin Johnson, who spent 2021 with the New York Giants, to be their potential nose tackle. However, it will be hard to pass up on Jordan Davis if he's available at pick 17. Per the NFL.com scouting report, the Georgia product, who is 6-feet 6 inches and 341 pounds, has the “size, power, and will to clog the drain and alter the offense's desire to run between the tackles.” That sounds like the kind of disruptive player the Chargers could use on their defensive line. With Davis clogging up the middle and Bosa and Mack wreaking havoc off the edges, the Chargers' defense would not be a fun unit to go up against in 2022.

1. Charles Cross

There's a chance that Charles Cross doesn't make it to the 17th pick. However, if the talented pass protector is available for the taking, the Chargers need to pounce. Rashawn Slater, last year's first-round pick, solidified the left side of the line last year, but the likes of Storm Norton and Foster Sarell simply weren't good enough to get the job done on the right side. Enter Cross, who projects as a day-one starter, just like Slater. Having the Mississippi State product on the line would give Herbert two book-end tackles for the next several years. That is the proper way to build around a talented quarterback.
