The first round of the NFL Draft is always full of surprises. Whether it is trades, players falling, or teams reaching for talent, it is always an exciting night. The 2020 first round was no exception.

Trades were at a minimum on Thursday night. There were no trades in the top 10 for the first time since 2015. Head-scratching picks were at a maximum. The New York Giants selecting Andrew Thomas fourth, Clyde Edwards-Helaire being the first running back taken, and Jordyn Brooks to Seattle are just a few. Here are the three biggest losers from round one.

3. Philadelphia Eagles

This is not so much because of their selection as it is because of the way it all played out. The Eagles needed a receiver. This was no secret coming in and they were heavily linked to LSU star Justin Jefferson. They decided to pass on Jefferson and take Jalen Reagor at No. 21 in the NFL Draft. This was confusing but relatively easy to justify.

Philadelphia messed up by not trading up when they realized that CeeDee Lamb was beginning to fall. The San Francisco 49ers did not select a receiver and this left Lamb up for grabs. The Eagles had a prime chance to move up and take the Oklahoma product but they decided to wait it out. To make matters worse, Lamb ended up with the Dallas Cowboys. That one has to be hard to swallow for the Eagles.

2. Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers is 36-years old and still playing at a high level. He is coming off a 4,000 yard season with 26 touchdowns and four interceptions. His touchdown numbers are low because of the Green Bay Packers lack of skill position weapons. Rodgers has made his feelings known about addressing this need in the draft and the Packers dropped the ball.

Green Bay drafted Jordan Love with the No. 26 pick in the NFL Draft. And they traded up to do it. So, not only did they not get Rodgers any weapons, they drafted his replacement. The Packers obviously did the same thing back in 2005 when they drafted Rodgers to sit behind Brett Favre. Love is an intriguing prospect, but he is no Rodgers.

This seems like a strange decision following a 13 win season and a trip to the NFC Championship Game. Wouldn’t you want to improve your offense off a 13-3 year with a Super Bowl in mind? Green Bay better hope this team has a plan.

1. Las Vegas Raiders

This was the beginning of a new era of Raider football. The Las Vegas Raiders made their first draft picks on Thursday night and let’s just say the Las Vegas era did not get off to a strong start.

The Raiders had two first round picks and they were both huge reaches. First, Las Vegas took Henry Ruggs III over Lamb and Jerry Jeudy. We all know that Jon Gruden likes his own guys so maybe he knows what he’s doing here. The Raiders pick at No. 19 in the NFL Draft is the biggest question mark.

Las Vegas drafted Damon Arnette at 19. This is the definition of a reach. The Raiders could have traded into the second round and drafted Arnette. When reviewing the draft, the Raiders filled needs but they did it in a strange way.
