The Miami Dolphins' offseason has been interesting to say the least. It started with the shock firing of Brian Flores, who guided the team to a 9-8 record after starting 1-7. Flores has since sued the team, and that suit is still ongoing. To replace him, in came 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, though some reports say it was nearly Sean Payton first.

Then the Dolphins shattered the NFL landscape once again by trading with the Kansas City Chiefs for the services of one Tyreek Hill. After all this craziness, the Dolphins finally spent the last few weeks after the draft being relatively quiet. Going into the 2022 NFL season they’ve still got a number of questions to answer, such as the long-term future of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. I humbly accept the job of attempting to give some answers, so here’s three way too early predictions for how the 2022 NFL season will play out for the Miami Dolphins.

Dolphins Way Too Early Predictions For The 2022 NFL Season

3. Mike Gesicki puts up top three tight end receiving yards numbers

In 2021, Mike Gesicki finished with 780 receiving yards, placing him sixth on the charts for tight ends in that category. It was also a career high for Gesicki, but that mark could be shattered in 2022. Tua loved to throw to Gesicki in 2021 when he was on the field, and if he is, expect big numbers from Gesicki once again.

Others ahead of him on the charts could regress as well, with Dallas Goedert, George Kittle, and Kyle Pitts potentially experiencing dips in their stats due to a drop in target share, uncertainty at quarterback, or both. This all sets up Gesicki, who put up those 780 yards despite only starting nine of the Dolphins' 17 games, to have a very good campaign in 2022.

Travis Kelce and especially Mark Andrews may stay ahead of Gesicki on the chart, but don't discount the former Penn State Nittany Lion from having not only a career year, but a breakout season after signing his franchise tag tender with the Dolphins this offseason.

2. Tyreek Hill under 1,000 yards for the first time since 2019

There is good reason for this prediction, I promise. In the last five seasons, Hill has only missed the 1,000-yard benchmark the one time in 2019, and he only played 12 games that season. The reason he may not hit it in 2022 is that he's no longer head and shoulders above every other receiver on the team.

In Kansas City, Hill was easily the No. 1 wide receiver on the team, and while he's still the top guy in Miami, it's no longer the case that the other pass catchers in the room are significantly behind him talent wise. Jaylen Waddle is coming off a 104-catch, 1,015-yard rookie season himself, and he seems poised to continue receiving a lot of targets from his close friend and quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa.

A lot of the time in Kansas City the only real competition Hill had for targets was Travis Kelce, and that huge percentage of target share for Hill just isn't necessary in Miami. This may actually serve him well. He has seemed a bit more prone to injury the past few seasons, potentially due to workload, and in Miami he has other very capable players who should be able to shoulder more of the work.

1. Tua Tagovailoa shows enough to get another season as starter

Not mincing words about it, Tua Tagovailoa has to show something in 2022. He has to show the growth expected of him when the Dolphins drafted him fifth overall in 2020. Frankly, if he can't show that growth with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Mike Gesicki to throw to, he's probably not going to in the future.

But I think Tua shows enough this year to earn the starting job for his fourth and potentially final season on his contract. It's tough to predict a stat line, but with the addition of Tyreek Hill, it's hard to predict how much different Tua's stats may be in 2022.
