San Francisco 49ers wideout Deebo Samuel wants to surprise receivers coach Wes Welker with his new body when the two can see each other again. Coming out of college, Samuel was too heavy and Welker wanted him to get down to 212 pounds. Samuel didn't feel comfortable at the time getting down to that number so they agreed upon him playing at 220.

Samuel has been working out with teammate Jerick McKinnon during the offseason, and the last couple of weeks they went to Houston to be with Adrian Peterson. McKinnon warned him about how intense the workouts would be, and it didn't take long for Samuel to quickly realize how tough it would be. The workout included an artificial hill, running in sand and track-style work. Via The Athletic's Matt Barrow, Samuel said,

“Our first workout was last Wednesday and it was three hours long … Whenever it’s time to go back — even if it’s tomorrow — we’ll be ready to rock.”

Samuel said once he and his 49ers teammates are allowed to be in Santa Clara again, he wants to surprise Welker by being under 216 pounds. Samuel was asked about losing some of his muscle mass with all the working out, but that isn't something he is concerned about. Samuel thinks with the extra speed along with the power, he is going to be even better than last season.

“The mindset ain’t gonna change … You’re going to feel the pain either way.”

Samuel is going to have an even bigger role in the 49ers offense, which is something he is taking very seriously.
