The San Francisco 49ers can breathe a sigh of relief after the knee injury sustained by running back Jerick McKinnon in practice was revealed not to be serious. After undergoing an MRI, McKinnon was diagnosed with a mere calf strain, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

McKinnon will sit out this week, which means he will miss joint practices as well as the team’s preseason game against the Texans. He will be re-evaluated next week.

McKinnon suffered the injury during practice and was seen grabbing the back of his right knee, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. McKinnon sat out the remainder of practice as a precaution after being checked out by the Niners medical staff.

The fact that McKinnon’s injury is not as serious as first feared should be a huge boost for the 49ers, who just signed him to a four-year, $30 million deal in March to be their starting running back.

The 26-year-old, who spent his first four years with the Minnesota Vikings, is coming off a career season in 2017. He racked up 570 rushing yards with three rushing touchdowns and also had 421 receiving yards on 51 catches with two more scores. All of those were new career-highs.

McKinnon’s injury comes just a couple days after another running back — Matt Breida — suffered a shoulder injury which may keep him out of the rest of preseason. With both McKinnon and Breida banged up, Joe Williams and Raheem Mostert will likely get a much higher workload in the Niners’ upcoming preseason games.
