The San Francisco 49ers have a quarterback dilemma on their hands. Head coach Kyle Shanahan isn't ready to tip his hand in favor of Jimmy Garoppolo or Trey Lance yet.

Shanahan fielded a question about his team's ongoing quarterback competition after defeating the Los Angeles Chargers in a Sunday preseason game. Per NFL.com's Kevin Patra, the 49ers head coach had a charismatic response.

“No, I'm not making that announcement. Nice try, though.” Shanahan said with a smirk.

The 49ers don't open their regular season until Sept. 12 in a game against the lowly Detroit Lions, meaning Shanahan has plenty of time to consider his options. Facing Detroit would serve as soft NFL debut for Lance.

Still, Shanahan has no intention of giving anything away.

“It’s hard for me to give a date,” the head coach told The Mercury News. “It’s based off when we know and when we feel like naming it. I promise it will be by that Sunday.”

Garoppolo and Lance struggled in San Francisco's second preseason game. While the 49ers ultimately prevailed 15-10, Garoppolo only completed three of his six pass attempts for 15 yards and an interception.

Lance saw significantly more playing time, completing eight of 14 passes for 102 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick.

The 49ers have one more tune up game before the real deal. Lance is running out of time to convince Shanahan he should start over Garoppolo.
