With the start of the new NFL year approaching, teams around the league have had to make some key decisions. The San Francisco 49ers are no different heading into the offseason. That said, linebacker Elvis Dumervil does not seem to be part of their plans moving forward.

According to the team's official website, San Francisco has decided not to pick up the option on his contract:

Additionally, the team informed LB Elvis Dumervil that it will not pick up the option in his contract.

The move may come as a bit of a surprise considering Dumervil led the team with 6.5 sacks last year. However, the Niners have ushered in quite the youth movement over the last year. As a result, it seems they may be looking to get younger across the board while shoring up some money for the offseason after their recent spending spree.

Dumervil is set to hit the market yet again after signing with the Niners prior to the 2017 season following his release from the Baltimore Ravens. Fortunately, his prospects are looking good after coming off yet another productive year. It is fair to assume that at this point in his career, the five-time Pro Bowler is looking to get back into playoff contention.

Following their disastrous start to last year, San Francisco managed to end on a high note with five straight wins. That said, the expectations for the Niners are rather high for a team coming off a six-win season. Not to mention, they are playing in the suddenly-competitive NFC West division.
