The San Francisco 49ers listed running back Elijah Mitchell as doubtful to play Sunday vs the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mitchell suffered a broken finger in Monday night's win vs the Los Angeles Rams.

With it looking unlikely Mitchell will play, look for veteran backup Jeff Wilson Jr. to see a lot of work. You might also finally see rookie running back Trey Sermon on the field.

49ers running back JaMychal Hasty is also out for the game against Jacksonville. That leaves the 49ers with only Wilson Jr. as a trusted option.

Wilson Jr. has seen opportunities like this in the past. Last season, while filling in for an injured Raheem Mostert, ran for 183 yards against the Arizona Cardinals. He had another game where he filled in and ran for 112 yards against the New England Patriots. So, this is nothing new for Wilson Jr.

It is also possible that fans finally get another glimpse of the running back the 49ers actually traded up for, Trey Sermon. The 49ers traded up into the 3rd round of the 2021 NFL Draft to take the Ohio State running back. However, he has not impressed and has been a healthy scratch as of late. With the depth issues facing the 49ers, he might finally get some playing time again.

San Francisco already lost running back Raheem Mostert for the season in Week 1 with a torn ACL. That prompted the 49ers to turn to rookie Elijah Mitchell. Mitchell has far exceeded expectations this season. He is 11th in the NFL in rushing yards with 560.
