The period for NFL teams to use their franchise tags on players is looming, and one player who will likely get tagged is San Francisco 49ers kicker Robbie Gould.

With the two-week window allowing NFL teams to designate a franchise player begins tomorrow and lasts until March 5, and it seems highly likely that the 49ers will be using theirs on Gould.

According to a report from NBC Sports’ Matt Malocco, it would be a “major surprise” if the team did not use its franchise tag on Gould should the two not be able to work out a contract extension.

The team hasn’t used their franchise tag since 2012, but with Gould set to become a free agent, and with the team flush with salary cap space, it looks like they are okay with using it again.

Heading into the offseason, San Francisco is expected to have roughly $67.5 million in cap room, so a $5 million hit for a kicker isn’t necessarily a huge deal. For the 49ers, there is security in retaining Gould, as he’s been one of the more reliable kickers in the NFL over the past two seasons.

Since signing with the 49ers, Gould has been exceptional, missing just three of his 75 field attempts. He’s currently the second-most accurate kicker in NFL history as well, with a career 87.7 percent hit conversation rate throughout his 14-year career.

Obviously, this is a kicker you would want to lock up long-term, but the 49ers won’t be letting him go anytime soon regardless. Not only was he a stellar kicker, but he was also the teams nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

All in all, it seems like Gould is a beloved member of the 49ers, so expect him back one way or another.
