The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a disappointing 2018 NFL season. Regardless, it appears they are rather optimistic about their prospects in free agency.

The 49ers have a number of voids to fill this offseason. According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, they will be looking to sign a starting-caliber safety:

I’m under the impression 49ers would like to sign — at the right price, of course — a starting caliber safety in free agency. In addition to Earl Thomas, there are other safeties who have became available. They might not all fit system, but the trickle down is positive for SF.

The thought San Francisco bringing in some help at safety is certainly not too far-fetched. There are not very many notable prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft. As a result, it seems they will look for an immediate solution over the top.

There are several intriguing options set to hit the free agency market this offseason. The biggest fish in the pond will undoubtedly be Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas. The five-time All-Pro would be a welcome addition to a 49er secondary that already features former Seahawks teammate Richard Sherman. Unfortunately, he will also garner the biggest price tag so it remains to be seen whether or not general manager John Lynch is willing to spend big money on a safety.

Fortunately, there are options on the market that could prove to be more cost-effective. The New York Giants intend to part ways with safety Landon Collins as well this offseason. Meanwhile, other names such as Tyrann Mathieu, Eric Weddle and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix are also set to hit the market as free agents.
