In what may be a surprise to some, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch will attend Mac Jones' second Alabama Pro Day on Tuesday instead of Justin Fields' session. This was first reported in Peter King's Football Morning in America and confirmed by Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.

The 49ers made big waves when they traded up from No. 12 to No. 3 in a blockbuster deal with the Miami Dolphins. The assumption by just about everyone is that the 49ers made the move to select a quarterback, and it's impossible to argue otherwise. The question then becomes, who are they aiming at with the No. 3 selection?

San Francisco almost has to be under the impression that Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson will go No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. This leaves Justin Fields, Trey Lance and perhaps now even Mac Jones.

The head-scratching part in this is that it's very possible the 49ers could have just stayed at No. 12 and had a shot at Jones. Maybe the 49ers didn't want to take any chances.

All of this is just speculation for now, but it is noteworthy that they are attending Jones' second Pro Day instead of Fields' Pro Day. It's hard to imagine the 49ers going to watch Jones only to eliminate him in their process of deciding which quarterback to take.

The chess match is fully underway, and trying to decipher what is valid and what is just talk and a smoke screen being thrown up becomes all the more difficult.

Plenty of eyes remain on the 49ers to see which way they end up leaning with that No. 3 pick. Their eyes, Tuesday, will be on Mac Jones.
