The San Francisco 49ers have been linked to an extremely high-profile free agent quarterback recently. Of course, that would be future Hall of Famer and longtime New England Patriots superstar Tom Brady.

However, people have speculated this isn't true because the team made it to the Super Bowl last year with Jimmy Garoppolo as the quarterback. And you shouldn't need reminding that Garoppolo himself is getting paid handsomely.

Due to that, many people have a hard time believing Brady is headed to the Bay. You can count Dianna Russini of ESPN in that group as well.

However, it's not really because of Garoppolo. Her belief, is that the 49ers are interested in someone who will be a free agent next offseason in Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Russini believes San Francisco wants to go after Cousins. Therefore, they won't spend time with Brady this year.

Mike Greenberg disagreed though. He pointed out that there's no reason they can't bring in Brady for 2020. He's going to be 43 by the start of next season. It's not like the 49ers would be signing him to a long-term deal anyways.

So why not give the team to Brady for one season, and go for a Super Bowl. Then immediately transition to Cousins, who you believe could be the franchise guy for years to come?

The problem though, is this is all speculation. Just like the Brady rumors, it's hard to tell how truthful this is. There's a strong chance the Vikings don't even want to move on from Cousins, and convince him to stay in Minnesota.

Meanwhile, there's no reason to believe the 49ers aren't happy with what Garoppolo provided them in 2019. There are a lot of moving parts in these rumors. So it's hard to really pin anything down.
