The Super Bowl nightmare doesn’t end for San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. This was his chance to erase the memory of his bitter defeat at Super Bowl LI with a win against the Kansas City Chiefs. Instead, he was once again on the wrong side of another epic Super Bowl comeback as the Niners let go of a 20-10 lead to lose 31-20.

His post-game press conference was somber, and he looked smaller in the video of USA Today’s Jori Epstein. However, he insisted that he was proud of what the boys achieved regardless of the final result.

Shanahan said that the team had opportunities to seal the game, harking back to the Tarvarious Moore interception early in the fourth frame. However, he ceded that they came up short and the Chiefs just played better football.

It’s an especially painful loss for Shanahan as this game was supposed to be his redemption. However, their inability to make the most of the opportunities they got was what did him in.

Until the 49ers coach corrects these wrongs by winning a Vince Lombardi trophy of his own, he’ll wonder what might have been in games like Super Bowl 54.
