When thinking about free-agent destinations, small-market franchises such as the Buffalo Bills are usually ones free agents shy away from signing with. Whether it's the location or the relative lack of current success of the franchise, the Bills are not what anyone would consider as an attractive market. But despite the limitations, the Buffalo still managed to capture the signatures of a few productive players throughout their history.

There are plenty of names worthy of being considered to be the best acquisition the Bills have gotten, but five of them have made their indelible marks and truly separates themselves from the rest due to the impact that they left behind.

Here are the top five free-agent signing in Buffalo Bills history.

5. Jordan Poyer

A seventh-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, Jordan Poyer crafted a really good NFL career so far.

In 2017, Poyer will sing a four-year contract with Buffalo. He will then proceed to record career highs of 95 tackles, 13 pass deflections, 5 interceptions, and 2 sack while starting 15 games for the year next to strong safety Micah Hyde. For the next season, he'd up the ante and will total 100 tackles with 4 takeaways and 2 sacks while being part in a defense that would be ranked 2nd in yards allowed per game. His tackle numbers will increase in 2018 to 107 for the season while playing all 16 games.

Already proving to be a sound investment for Buffalo, Poyer's productivity earned him a two-year contract extension with the Bills that he signed in March of 2020.

4. Bryce Paup

Linebacker Bryce Paup will have an amazing five years with the Green Bay Packers before signing with the Buffalo Bills.

Paup will play three excellent seasons with Buffalo, as he will lead the league in sacks in 1995 with 17.5 quarterback sacks, which will mark as the fourth-highest single-season total of the 1990s, on his way to a Pro-Bowl selection, a first-team All-Pro honors, and winning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Paup will have totals of 215 tackles, 33 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions and will be named to two more Pro Bowls in his stint with the Bills.

3. Ted Washington

Nose tackle Ted Washington signed with Buffalo in 1995.

Williams will play six seasons for the Bills, lining up next to hall of fame defensive tackle Bruce Smith. He will play in 95 games while amassing totals of 281 solo tackles to go along with 19.5 sacks. He will be named to four Pro-Bowl selections during that stint, and will be selected as a second-team All-Pro in 1997.

2. Takeo Spikes

The Buffalo Bills will acquire linebacker Takeo Spikes after the Cincinnati Bengals refused to match a six-year, $32 million offer sheet in 2003.

In the same year, Spikes will tally 126 total tackles with 2 sacks and 2 interceptions, on his way to a Pro-Bowl berth. In 2004, Spikes will build off a great year by having his best year as a Bill, making 70 solo tackles with 3 sacks to go along with 5 interceptions and scoring 2 pick-sixes. Spikes will once again make the Pro-Bowl and will be named to a second-team All-Pro selection

Injuries will prevent Spikes to have another productive year in Buffalo before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2007.

1. Mario Williams

After intense negotiations, defensive end Mario Williams signed a six-year deal with the Buffalo Bills worth $100 million, the largest contract offered for a defensive player in the NFL at the time.

For their money, the Bills got an absolute force of nature.

In 2012, Williams will start in all 16 games while getting 10.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. The next year, he'd up his sacks total to 13, while also breaking the single-game sacks record with 4.5 in a game against the Carolina Panthers. In 2014, he'd record his best year for the franchise by tallying 14.5 sacks with 2 forced fumbles.

In Williams' four year stint with the Bills, he will earn a first team and a second-team All-Pro selections to go along with two Pro-Bowls. Williams is arguably one of, if not the best acquisition in Buffalo Bills's history.
