The major television networks are either in or at the end of their current contracts with the NFL, which could present an opportunity to streaming services. Amazon is apparently jumping into the picture.

John Ourand of Sports Business Daily reported Amazon is nearing a broadcasting package with the NFL, one that would apparently allow them to stream at least one game during Wild Card weekend:

Amazon is expected to be aggressive in bidding on the next round of NFL rights after acquiring the rights to simulcast one NFL Wild Card game this season. A source said that Amazon was paying in the $15-20M range for the rights to that game, which will be produced by CBS.

Ourand also reported the NFL is likely to “carve out a package of games” that Amazon can stream exclusively. He also noted this might be something of a “feeler” period for Amazon to see whether they will take on an expanded partnership with the NFL.

Indeed, Amazon already has the rights to streaming for specified “Thursday Night Football” games this season, though the number of persons streaming live sports has apparently been fairly low. There is also a bit of a crowded market, with the likes of fuboTV, YouTube TV and Hulu also entering the space.

Regardless, it seems the tech giant is invested in at least testing the waters and determining whether to pour more money and resources into a broadcast package with the NFL. It could drive Amazon members to purchase Prime packages though, again, streaming is low when it comes to live sports.
