Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani had a huge day, as it was announced that he would be the cover athlete on MLB The Show 22. Not only that, but Ohtani was featured in a story published by Sam Blum of The Athletic. Ohtani spoke about many things, including his potential contract extension with the Angels. The two-way star offered a three-word response to a question about his contract extension talks with the Angels, via The Athletic and MLB Trade Rumors.

Ohtani tells Sam Blum of the Athletic (via an interpreter) the team and his representatives at CAA Baseball have had “no talks yet” regarding an extension.

Angels star Shohei Ohtani told Sam Blum of The Athletic that there have been “no talks yet” on a contract extension. The MLB The Show 22 cover athlete obviously hasn't had discussions with the team during the lockout, though this means that no traction was gained prior to the shutdown.

The American League MVP had previously said that he was open to a contract extension with the Angels back in October. Ohtani signed a two-year contract last year that had designs on paying him $8.5 million to avoid 2022 arbitration.

The MLB The Show 22 cover athlete's skill at both pitching and hitting makes a contract extension difficult to measure, as noted by MLB Trade Rumors. Ohtani won nine games and pitched to a 3.18 ERA with 156 strikeouts in 130 /3 innings while clubbing 46 homers and stealing 26 bases with a .965 OPS for the Angels.

A Shohei Ohtani contract extension could potentially be costly for the Angels, though it would be a wise move to lock up the two-way star before he hits free agency.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the lockout ends.
