Frenkie de Jong sees that Barcelona’s season can already be characterized as a “failure.”

De Jong recently spoke to the Dutch-based outlet NOS, where he shared a reflection on Barca’s ongoing campaign so far.

“I think that this current season is already a failure,” de Jong said. “We’re already out of the Champions League, the cup, and we’re 14 points [15 points] away from Real Madrid.”

As de Jong touched on, Barca has had quite a roller-coaster season so far filled with a multitude of ups and downs. The Catalan side failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League knockout stage for the first time since the 2003-2004 season, as it finished in third place in Group E and scored a mere two goals in six matches.

Barca’s dismal La Liga form from the latter stages of last season has carried over into this campaign, as it currently sits just outside the top-four in the league standings. More so, Barca was eliminated from the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey competitions in January.

As Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez recently touched on, the club now has to shift its focus on both the La Liga and Europa League competitions for the remainder of the season. Barca will return to league action in the upcoming home clash with Atletico Madrid and will meet Napoli in the opening round of the Europa League knockout stage next month.
