The Chicago Bears are expected to release tight end Dion Sims, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Sims was due to make $6 million next season.

The 28-year-old played in eight games this past year, catching just two passes for nine yards.

Sims, who played his collegiate football at Michigan State University, was originally selected by the Miami Dolphins in the fourth round (106th pick overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He appeared in 15 contests during his rookie campaign, registering six catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

The following year, Sims' role within the Dolphins' offense grew, as he hauled in 24 receptions for 284 yards and a couple of scores. Then, in 2015, he snared 18 balls for 127 yards and a touchdown.

Sims went on to spend one more year in Miami, finishing with 26 catches for 256 yards while reaching the end zone four times in 2016. He proceeded to sign with the Bears that offseason.

He started all 14 games during his first season in Chicago, catching 15 passes for 180 yards and a score.

The Bears are coming off of a 2018 campaign in which they won 12 games and captured the NFC North division title, making the playoffs for the first time since the 2010-11 season based on the strength of their third-ranked defense.

However, they suffered a devastating Wild Card Round loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, as Cody Parkey's 43-yard field goal was tipped before striking two posts as time expired, resulting in a 16-15 win for the Eagles.

Chicago will likely enter next season as one of the favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
