The Chicago Bears have placed tight end Trey Burton on the injured reserve list due to a calf injury, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

So ends a disastrous season for Burton.

Heralded by many as a potential breakout candidate coming into the year, Burton underwent sports hernia surgery during the offseason and was limited early on as a result.

He ended up playing in eight games, but his production was very light, as he logged just 14 catches for 84 yards.

This comes after a 2018 campaign in which Burton hauled in 54 receptions for 569 yards and six touchdowns in what was, by far, the best season of his career.

The 28-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Florida, went undrafted but eventually landed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014. He did not log a statistic that season, and in 2015, he tallied three grabs for 54 yards.

Burton finally began to earn regular playing time in 2016, catching 37 passes for 327 yards and a score. Then, the following season, he snared 23 balls for 248 yards while reaching the end zone five times and was part of an Eagles team that won the Super Bowl.

Burton's improvement over his final two years in Philadelphia led to him landing a four-year, $32 million contract with the Bears in March 2018, but after a very disappointing second season, Chicago may end up looking for another tight end this coming offseason.

Of course, Burton is hardly the only thing that has gone wrong in the Windy City in 2019, as the Bears are just 4-5.
