The gavel came down hard on Chicago Bears wide receiver Javon Wims following his immature actions on Sunday. The wideout has been suspended for two games after deciding to punch New Orleans Saints defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson twice.

The NFL's league office released a statement on Monday:

Wims will appeal the suspension, per NFL insider Ian Rapaport.

During the Bears' Week 8 bout with the Saints, Wims apparently grew frustrated after Gardner-Johnson ripped out Wims' mouthpiece and elbowed Bears wideout Anthony Miller. There were also reports that Wims had told Bears officials of how Gardner-Johnson spit on him prior to the breakout altercation. Wims exited the game on Sunday following his ejection with only catch for nine yards. The 26-year-old wideout has completed five of his eight targets for 35 yards this season, resulting in one touchdown.

The Bears went on to lose against the Saints by three points with a final score of 26-23 in overtime. If Wims' suspension is upheld, he'll miss this weekend's game against the Tennessee Titans and then Week 10 against the Minnesota Vikings. Chicago could also discipline Wims further, including the possibility of a release.

As for Gardner-Johnson, his personality has been noted in the past month, seeing as how he recently got into an altercation at practice with teammate Michael Thomas, which resulted in Thomas being out the next game. The 22-year-old defensive back defended his innocence following this latest incident:

“It ain't got nothing to do with me. If he's acting out, that's on him,” Gardner-Johnson said on Monday, via ESPN. “It wasn't no incident. We won the game. I mean, everybody, it's a lot of he said, he said. Ain't nothing happened. Nobody got spit on.”

Gardner-Johnson will surely tread lightly in the weeks to come if he truly desires to stay out of the negative spotlight.
