Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver A.J. Green was spotted wearing a walking boot last week after hurting his toe against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As it turns out, that injury is more serious than he initially let on.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Green is set to see a foot specialist to determine the true extent of his injury and whether he might need surgery:

Bengals star WR AJ Green was slated to visit foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay during the bye, sources say, as his toe swelled up. Clarity is coming soon, with everything — day-to-day, week-to-week, surgery — on the table for Green. Big appointment.

Adam Schefter of ESPN adds that whatever the result of that consultation, Green is still likely to miss time due to his injury. But of course, they will obviously be hoping that Green won’t need to have surgery, which could potentially spell the end of his year.

Green is having yet another outstanding season for the Bengals. Through eight games, he has 45 catches for 687 yards and six touchdowns, which is tied for fourth in the league.

Losing Green for a significant amount of time would be a huge blow to a Bengals offense that’s already significantly banged up. Tyler Eifert and Giovani Bernard are already out for the season, while Tyler Kroft and John Ross are also dealing with injuries.

With Green and Ross out, the Bengals will have to rely even more on Tyler Boyd, their last reliable wide receiver left standing. Boyd is having a breakout season in Year 3, leading the team with 49 receptions to go with 620 yards and five touchdowns.
