Despite being the subject of trade rumors for the better part of a month, the Cincinnati Bengals are apparently now getting ready to get wide receiver John Ross more involved in their offensive game.

In talks with the Bengals new offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, he indicated that not only are the Bengals planning on keeping Ross around, but that the team could utilize him much more effectively than he has been in the past.

“His production in the red zone was really interesting because you don’t look at him and think ‘red zone target.’ His speed dictates he’d be something other than that,” Callahan said (via Pro Football Talk).

Speaking to how he performed last year, Callahan also noted that the team could get him the ball in other places on the field in order to boost his production.

“If we get seven touchdowns out of him again, I’ll be really happy. That’s really good production in this league. As for where he fits outside the red zone, I think there’s a lot of places we can find the ball for him.”

Ross came into the league with a lot of excitement, especially after he broke the Scouting Combine’s 40-yard dash record. Since then, however, he’s petered off, and last year he caught just 21 passes for 210 yards, despite scoring seven touchdowns.

For Ross and the Bengals, Callahan’s words will hopefully mean that the first-round receiver might finally be ready to live up to the hype on a rebuilding Bengals team.
