Letting a team down has been a field of specialty for Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, but on Wednesday, he decided to call out one of his players for being a big disappointment.

Speaking in front of reporters during Wednesday’s press conference, Lewis brought up rookie wide receiver John Ross’ name and didn’t hesitate to publicly pick on his first-year wideout, per Paul Dehner of Cincinnati.com.

“The thing I told him and it was great because Andy was with him in the hall on Tuesday,” Lewis said. “For Andy, against that coverage to throw him that football, he should understand how the quarterback feels about him. That he expects him to be where he needs to be. He let his teammates down. He let me down. He let Andy down.”

Lewis was referring to a particular play in last Sunday’s 24-20 road loss at the hands of the Tennessee Titans in which Ross failed to catch a long throw from quarterback Andy Dalton in the second quarter. Ross wouldn’t be grilled this much by Lewis, even if he didn’t catch that pass, had he not taken his foot off the pedal while running the route. But he did, and as a result, he wasn’t able to get to the landing spot of Dalton’s heave.

A Lewis outburst with regards to Ross was a long time coming. Ross is one of the most disappointing rookies this season. The Bengals spent a first-round pick in selecting Ross ninth overall in this year’s NFL Draft, but he has yet to record a catch through nine games this season. His slow progress has forced Lewis to use him sparingly, as evidenced by the paltry 17 snaps Ross has appeared in since entering the league.

Hopefully for Ross, he’ll start to show some signs of life in the coming weeks; though, that’s easier said than done.
