The Creighton Bluejays have hugely overachieved this season. Big East championship odds analysts would immediately agree. Coach Greg McDermott has turned in his best coaching job at Creighton, given that he had a young and inexperienced team one year after a senior-laden group went to the Sweet 16. This young team will go to the NCAA Tournament, and it has a chance to win the Big East Tournament in a year when Seton Hall and Connecticut received more preseason buzz than the Bluejays.
When you make your Creighton Villanova prediction, remember that Creighton lost Ryan Nembhard, a workhorse performer at both ends of the floor who was essential to the composition of this roster. The injury in February left Creighton shorthanded. McDermott needed to look to his bench for younger and less proven players who could steal minutes without the team suffering. That is exactly what has happened. McDermott has had his freshmen and sophomores ready to play, cultivating them as the season has unfolded. The college basketball odds might have been stacked against Creighton, but the Jays have ignored the conventional wisdom by getting an NCAA bid and hammering regular-season champion Providence in the semifinals to make the title game of the Big East Tournament in New York.
Villanova has been very good this year. The Wildcats did struggle earlier in the season. They got blown out by Creighton on the road in Omaha, and there were times this season when Jay Wright didn't have all his players on the same page. Marquette swept the Wildcats, and other bumps on the road emerged for a team which entered the season with Final Four expectations. However, in the latter half of February, Collin Gillespie improved his level of play. Villanova began to look a lot more like the team many people expected to see in November.
When thinking about a Creighton Villanova pick, remember that Villanova beat UConn in the semifinals of this tournament on Friday. UConn has a home-court advantage at Madison Square Garden. No Big East fan base fills the venerable arena more than Husky fans, who create a home game atmosphere for Connecticut. Villanova's ability to silence the pro-UConn crowd is a testment to the composure this team has, and to the level of ball it is displaying right now.
