NFL commissioner Roger Goodell thinks that the Buffalo Bills need a new stadium to stay competitive, but Hall of Famer Jim Kelly doesn't seem to be on board. New Era Field opened in 1973 and has gone through many different renovations during the years, but Goodell thinks the time is now to open up a brand new stadium.

“A stadium is going to maintain the kind of fanbase that's going to keep the team competitive and allow us to be successful in that market,” Goodell said via wgrz.com. “And that's exactly why we're focusing on it here in this market, as well as we have (in) every other market.”

The expectation is if a new stadium were built, it would also change locations, probably to downtown and that isn't something Kelly is on board for.

“I can’t see going downtown. I love where it’s at. But that’s just my opinion.”

Although the stadium does look a bit outdated and the facilities aren't completely modernized there is no doubt of the history at this stadium, and the home field advantage it provides. It doesn't matter how good or how bad the team is, Buffalo is one of the hardest places to play for opposing teams.

It's unclear how on board Bills owners are with a new stadium, but Terry Pegula did say back at the owners meeting if they did build a new stadium they would like it to be a scaled down version of one the stadiums that have gone up in the last few years.

This is still a story that has a lot to be decided, but Kelly has made his vote clear.
