The NFL's enigmatic catch rule struck once again in Week 16. This time, it came at the expense of Buffalo Bills wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin.

At the time of Benjamin's catch, it almost seemed like a sure lock to be confirmed, however, it was ultimately overturned by the league’s head of officiating, Al Riveron. Video has now surfaced of deep judge Mark Hittner holding a conversation with quarterback Tyrod Taylor and head coach Sean McDermott here he is admittedly confused by the ruling via John Barchard of BGN Radio:

“That’s a hell of a throw, and a catch, I thought,” deep judge Mark Hittner told Taylor.

McDermott then asked, “How is that incomplete?” to which Hittner replied, “I don’t know.”

The video essentially confirms that nearly everyone thought it was a catch except Riveron. Needless to say, having a member of his own crew questioning his call is certainly not a good look.

Although New England ultimately went on o win by a 21-point margin, the play would have given the Bills some nice momentum going into halftime. Furthermore, it was the second time in consecutive weeks that the Patriots had been involved in a controversial touchdown ruling.

Regardless, it is clear that the NFL has some major work to do in terms of clearing up its catch rule. This year has featured plenty of questionable instances in which the wrong call has been made despite all the replay tools that officials currently have at their disposal.
