The Buffalo Bills made the surprising move to part ways with veteran wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin on Tuesday afternoon. Head coach Sean McDermott doesn't sound like he'll miss him.

There was no inkling that the Bills were trending in the direction of cutting Benjamin at this point of the season with a month left in the campaign. McDermott commented on the decision for the first time on Wednesday with a short but direct response as to why the organization moved on from the former Carolina Panthers wideout, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

“Obviously it didn’t work,” McDermott said.

Heading into the 2018 campaign, Buffalo hoped Benjamin could step firmly into the role of being a clear-cut No.1 receiving option in the passing game, but he struggled to prove that on a week-to-week basis. There was no point for Buffalo to wait to make the move if they already decided it was necessary after the season, and it gives Benjamin a chance to potentially latch on to another team looking to make a push to the playoffs.

Benjamin has shown flashes in his career that he can be a big playmaker in the passing game, but he has struggled to stay on the field over the last two years. This was certainly the case at times with the Bills this year, as he piled up 23 catches for 354 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Regardless of the Bills' issues at quarterback or in the passing game, Benjamin was simply not productive. He notched just one game with more than 50 receiving yards while falling below 30 receiving yards five times.

Ultimately, the pairing just didn't work out, and Benjamin being cut allows both parties to move more quickly rather than waiting until the offseason.
