A new Bioshock movie has just been picked up by Netflix, reviving a project that has been shelved for more than a decade.

After the huge success of Bioshock back in 2007, the game was set to release a film and was under development in 2008. Looks like what once was is finally happening, Netflix officially announces the upcoming Bioshock film.

Recently on Twitter, Netflix announced their official partnership with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to produce the long-awaited Bioshock film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the companies have been working on their partnership deal for almost a year. With that being said, the upcoming Bioshock film currently doesn’t have a writer or filmmaker.

The Bioshock movie has been a long time in the making. Back in 2008, a Bioshock film was already in development under the supervision of Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. Unfortunately for the production team, the budget for the film was an issue as well as differences in creative decisions. There’s also the fact that the film was going to be R-rated which was a concern during that time period. It’s too bad these factors led to the film’s inevitable downfall, the concept art for Verbinski’s Bioshock movie looked promising.

These days R-rated films are becoming more common which makes it easier to release a Bioshock movie. Lucky for 2K and Take-Two Interactive because Netflix is looking to establish well-known franchises on their platform. Honestly, a Bioshock movie coming out in this era turned out to be perfect timing. Given how technology has evolved and CGI in films has become realistic-looking since 2008, Bioshock can maximize its visual effects. As of right now, there isn’t an official release date for the film. We can probably expect a target date from the studio once they put together their production team.
