The Portland Trail Blazers had an ideal summer league which was capped off by their championship victory. While player development is more of the focus than actual wins, it is never a bad thing for the team to come out on top. The Trail Blazers did just this by going 4-1 in Las Vegas and cruising past the Knicks in the championship. This is their first Summer League title since 2018.

One of the disappointing storylines was the injury to Shaedon Sharpe. The 7th overall pick injured his shoulder in his debut and was forced to be shut down for the rest of the summer league. Sharpe has been diagnosed with a small labrum team which will take roughly two weeks to fully heal. While it is not set to carry into the regular season, this did prevent the 19-year-old from getting much time on the court. This would have been a valuable opportunity to work through some rust which would have been a major benefit as Sharpe did not suit up at all for Kentucky last season.

Regardless, there were still plenty of positive takeaways for the Trail Blazers. Here are the three biggest overreactions to Portland's Summer League performances.

Trail Blazers 2022 NBA Las Vegas Summer League Overreactions

Jabari Walker is an NBA talent

There was a sense of excitement when the Trail Blazers landed Jabari Walker with the 57th overall pick. The Colorado product proved why in the Summer League and made it clear he has a chip on his shoulder. Walker did a little bit of everything for Portland and was a key part of the team's success. In total, he averaged 12.4 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.0 steal, and 1.0 block per game. Walker also was very efficient and connected on 42.9% of his three-point attempts and shot 62.9% from the field overall.

The 6'9″ wing plays with a high motor and has an impressive feel for the game. He plays a winning brand of basketball and has the early feel of a draft-day steal. Walker has already been offered a contract by the Trail Blazers and backed up why this was the case. It is unclear what his NBA role will be in the short term, but expect Jabari Walker to find a way to stick in the league for a long time.

Trendon Watford looks great

Another notable steal by the Trail Blazers was adding Trendon Watford as an undrafted free agent. This occurred after last year's draft and Watford was on a two-way contract with Portland last season. Despite the two-way label, Watford got a solid opportunity with the Blazers last season and had some really nice flashes. Heading into his second year as a professional, he looks to be continuing to build off this.

In the Summer League, Watford averaged 13.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. He took over in the championship game and was vital to the team's win. His success was recognized by earning Summer League MVP. While he still can do too much at times, there was some growth in his body control and overall feel for the game. Look for Watford to build off this success and grow into a more consistent rotational role this season.

Keon Johnson will be a three-level scorer in NBA

One of the biggest players to watch this season is Keon Johnson. The smooth second-year Tennessee guard came to the Trail Blazers as part of the Robert Covington and Norman Powell trade last season. He had a somewhat quiet rookie season after being an exciting NBA prospect. Now heading into his second season, it appears Johnson is ready to make a larger impact.

During the Summer League, Johnson led the Trail Blazers in scoring at 14.2 points per game. He also added 3.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. It still is not quite clear what Johnson's NBA role will be but there were some positive signs of growth in his game. He projects much more as a three-level scorer in the long term than a true floor general. Johnson flashed some really good feel for cutting off the ball and navigated to his spots on the floor well. Look for him to build off the strong summer league performance and make a more notable impact this season.

There was a lot to like from the Trail Blazers outside of these three names as well. Brandon Williams, Greg Brown, and Luka Garza each had a few solid moments as well. While the focus of Portland will be on contending this year, it is still a great sign to see this development from the young players. Look for the team to carry this momentum into the regular season as they attempt to make some noise this year.
