The Portland Trail Blazers have decided not to extend a qualifying offer to point guard Shabazz Napier, thus effectively making him an unrestricted free agent, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

Sources: Portland will not extend a qualifying offer to guard Shabazz Napier, allowing him to enter July 1 as an unrestricted free agent. Napier had a strong season as a reserve guard for the Trail Blazers.

The former UConn guard, who led the Huskies to an unlikely NCAA title in 2014, is coming off the best season of his NBA career thus far. In 74 games for the Blazers, the diminutive guard stitched together averages of 8.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.1 steals. He was not that efficient on offense, though, as he shot just 39.5 percent from the field to go with a decent 36.3 percent from behind the arc.

Napier also had some success when Damian Lillard had to sit out some games due to a hamstring injury in the middle of the season, helping C.J. McCollum stabilize the backcourt in the absence of Lillard.

Clearing Shabazz Napier off their roster is a direct result of the Blazers trying to clear some cap space, as they are still currently over the salary cap by around $12 million.
