The Toronto Blue Jays were inches away from making the playoffs last season. They went all-in on this offseason to upgrade their roster. After making big splashes in the pitching market with Kevin Gausman and Yusei Kikuchi, they have added a star position player to their lineup.

According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Blue Jays are swinging a trade for Matt Chapman. The Oakland Athletics' star third baseman is a defensive wizard and provides another steller veteran to surround young stars Vladdy Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. The Athletics are expected to receive compensation in the form of prospects, per Morosi.

Chapman has won three Gold Glove Awards and two Platinum Glove Awards in his five-year career, all of which have come in Oakland. The 28-year-old handles the hot corner better than almost any player in recent memory. He has also been a very strong hitter in the past, though he heads into his first season with the Blue Jays after his worst season at the plate.

In 151 games last season, Chapman posted a triple slash of .210/.314/.403 with 111 hits and 27 home runs. He posted an OPS+ of just 100 but has posted an OPS+ of at least 110 every other season. Toronto now has an even more loaded lineup. Even if Chapman fails to become an elite hitter again, it's a fair trade-off to add one of the best defenders in baseball.

This trade is also significant because it likely takes away a suitor in the Freddie Freeman market. Toronto had been in pursuit of the star first baseman but have since shifted their attention to Kyle Schwarber, who has played in an outfielder/designed hitter combo role the past few seasons.
