The 2022 MLB Home Run Derby is set for July 18. Unfortunately for Toronto Blue Jays fans, they won't get to see Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the contest this year. The star slugger declined the invitation because of an injury he suffered in May.

According to Shi Davidi of SportsNet, Guerrero announced his decision following the Blue Jays' Monday night win over the Boston Red Sox.

“My wrist is fine right now but I've got to be careful — there are too many swings in a home run derby,” Guerrero said through his interpreter Hector Lebron. “I don't want to take a chance that my wrist gets hurt again and it gets bad and I won't be able to help the team win, which is what we're trying to do here. I don't want to risk it.”

The star slugger has a good point; getting hurt during an extracurricular contest isn't worth it. At just 23 years old, he leads the team in home runs with 18 and RBIs with 45. Not to mention, one of his home runs and two of his RBIs came from Toronto's win on Monday.

Guerrero has struggled with hitting balls out of the park recently, and his homer Monday night was only his second in 11 games. Hopefully, he is getting back on track to put up numbers similar to his at the beginning of the season. The last thing the Blue Jays need is for him to injure himself and fall behind again.
