After a disappointing season that saw them finish with a 5-11 record and miss the playoffs, the Detroit Lions are looking to retool their lineup for the 2021 season. For new general manager Brad Holmes, that means looking at the draft to potentially fill their needs at every position, including those where they already have existing young talent.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Holmes said that the team will carefully consider what to do with their seventh overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and even suggested that they could draft a quarterback.

“I think that the quarterback class is good this year. I like the crop of quarterbacks that are coming out in this year's draft,” Holmes said regarding this year’s list of signal-callers,” according to NFL.com's Nick Shook.“That's obviously always a very, very important position. When you're picking inside the top 10, I don't think there's really a position that you can look past.”

While this year’s rookie class indeed has no shortage of talented quarterbacks, the remarks were still surprising considering the Lions’ biggest move of the offseason was trading for quarterback Jared Goff. Last month, Detroit acquired Goff along with two first-round picks and a third-round pick from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for longtime quarterback Matthew Stafford.

But aside from Goff, it seems that anything can also happen to the team’s other young players like wide receiver Kenny Golladay and edge rusher Romeo Okwara. The Lions can decide to use their franchise tag on Golladay, the team’s best young receiver, and Okwara, an important part of their defense. But Holmes said that the team will take its time in deciding which player will receive the franchise tag, despite praising Golladay’s abilities on the field and even if most of the team's pass-catchers are hitting free agency.

There’s a lot that can still happen in the coming months, but based on Holmes’ remarks, it is clear that nothing is certain for the Lions this offseason. The team is taking its time and looking at all the options that they can explore to try to improve their roster for next season, even if it means making their young players wait a little longer.
