The Atlanta Braves suffered a brutal blow on Saturday when superstar Ronald Acuna Jr. tore his right ACL while trying to catch a ball off the bat of Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the fifth inning against the Miami Marlins. Acuna was carted off the field in tears after Chisholm got an inside-the-park home run on the play, and an MRI later revealed a full tear of the ACL that will knock the star outfielder out for the rest of the season.

Before the official diagnosis was known following Atlanta's 5-4 win, several of Acuna's Braves teammates — including starting pitcher Max Fried and shortstop Dansby Swanson — spoke out about the injury. They could tell it was a bad one when it happened given the amount of pain Acuna was in.

“You never like to see one of your teammates try to make a really great play and then come up injured,” Fried said. “Obviously, we could tell that he was going through some pain. It’s obviously unfortunate when you see one of your best players go down, but you just try to stay focused on the task at hand and try to close it out.”

“You never want to see one of your teammates go down like that, especially being in pain the way he was,” said shortstop Dansby Swanson. “That’s never a good sign. But we’re hopeful and praying for a quick recovery with whatever the diagnosis [is].”

Chisholm was also sad after the game and almost felt guilty about getting that home run because of Acuna's injury.

Acuna had been slated to start in the All-Star Game in Denver and was looking like an MVP candidate before the injury. He finishes his season with 24 home runs, 52 RBI and a slash line of .283/.394/.596.

The Braves are 44-44 on the season. This is only four games behind the first-place New York Mets in the NL East, but one has to wonder how this Acuna injury will impact Atlanta's strategy for the trade deadline.
