Teams around the NFL are beginning to exercise the fifth-year options for players in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, but the Denver Broncos aren't among those teams. According to Mike Klis of 9News, Denver has decided to decline the fifth-year option on Garett Bolles.

Back in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Broncos selected Bolles with the No. 20 pick out of Utah. When Denver took Bolles, they were hoping that he'd become a longtime fixture at left tackle.

While he's started in all 48 games since 2017, he's been far from consistent at left tackle. Just this past season, Bolles allowed four sacks in 1,012 snaps played for the Broncos. On the other hand, Bolles committed 17 penalties (second-most among offensive linemen in the NFL).

Since he's entered the NFL, Bolles has shown flashes of being a talented offensive tackle. But the penalty issues and the inconsistencies on the field make it hard for the Broncos to commit to him for the future.

Earlier this offseason, guys like Andrew Whitworth and Anthony Castonzo were able to secure lucrative contracts from their respective teams. In addition, Trent Brown was able to get a four-year, $66 million contract from the Las Vegas Raiders last offseason. Brown is the highest-paid offensive tackle in the NFL, in terms of base salary.

Seeing that offensive tackles are garnering expensive contracts, the Broncos aren't comfortable extending him another season. Also, with Drew Lock as their future quarterback, the Broncos are making sure they are able to surround him with a formidable offensive line. Therefore, if Bolles doesn't perform up to standards in 2020, he'll become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
