If you listen to John Elway, Denver Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco is still in his prime. However, that has not stopped the team from adding multiple young quarterbacks to its roster.

Along with drafting former Missouri Tiger Drew Lock in the second round, the Broncos are now signing former Boise State signal caller Brett Rypien, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic.

Rypien is reportedly getting a “six-figure guarantee” as part of the deal. Such deals generally include a smaller bonus and a base salary guarantee for the coming year.

Along with Flacco and Lock, the Broncos also have Kevin Hogan and Garrett Grayson on the depth chart at the moment. At least one of the two now appear candidates to be released following the signing. Hogan served as the backup to Case Keenum in 2018.

Rypien, the nephew of former Washington quarterback Mark Rypien, completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 3,705 yards last year with 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Elway originally planned on not taking a quarterback early in the draft, though Lock's unexpected fall presented too much value to ignore. Elway spoke on the his comfort with Flacco driving the decision after Thursday's first round.

“Our comfort with Joe enabled us to pass on a quarterback,” Elway said. “What made that decision is, Joe is fitting really well with what we want to do offensively, and he looked great in our minicamp last week. He really put on a throwing exhibition last week in camp.”

“I truly think we’ve got a guy coming into his prime.”

However, Flacco's last few years do little to back up that claim, including a passer rating between 80 and 84 the last four years.
