Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly was enjoying a fine preseason up until his shaky performance in the finale versus the Arizona Cardinals. Fortunately, it seems to have had no effect on his standing with general manager John Elway.

Kelly earned the backup spot over Paxton Lynch thanks to his performance in the preseason. According to Nicki Jhavbala of The Athletic, general manager John Elway said he will remain as such going into the 2018 NFL season:

“Yep, I think so,” Elway said. “We’ll see what happens tonight, but I think that Chad has done enough to secure that second spot for now. He’s worked his tail off this offseason, really done a great job and plays with that fire. I texted Jim Kelly the other night and I said, ‘He’s got that Kelly determination and competitiveness,’ and you can see it when he’s playing.”

Elway's comments should come as no surprise. Between him and Lynch, Kelly was clearly the better option up until preseason finale. His performance through the first three games demonstrated the type of progression Elway wanted to see out of the backups.

Of course, this admittance may be a bit difficult for Elway. He has always been high on Lynch ever since he selected him with the 26th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. It goes without saying that Denver made some serious changes under center this offseason. However, Elway hoped the addition of quarterback Case Keenum would give Lynch more time to develop into a potential starter while serving as a backup. Unfortunately, his plan for the young quarterback does not seem to be coming to fruition as he now sits on the roster bubble.
