Running back Melvin Gordon might have played his last game as a member of the Denver Broncos, as he is set to hit free agency in March. While there's still a door open for him to come back to the Broncos, he seems not interested in being second fiddle to Javonte Williams.

Gordon recently appeared on Fox Sports' The Herd with Colin Cowherd (h/t Jon Heath of Broncos Wire) and basically said that he is not yet ready to accept the role of an RB2, something that's likely to be the case in Denver should he re-sign with the team.

“I know eventually they want him to be the guy and to take over,” Gordon said during a recent interview with Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports. “And the thing is, I’m still fairly young and I still want to compete at a high level. I just don’t wanna take a backseat.

Williams has been a pleasant surprise for the Broncos in 2021, as he carved out a significant role on the offense right in his very first season in the NFL. He tied Gordon for the most carries (203) in the regular season and had 903 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. Williams also had more success in the passing attack than Gordon, finishing with 43 receptions and three touchdowns on 53 targets.

Williams' great rookie season has made Gordon look a bit expendable, but with a big cap space, the Broncos could afford to get Gordon back. It will just be up to Gordon whether he'd be willing to take the risk of see himself be a second option in the backfield behind Williams
