The Denver Broncos have a quarterback competition between Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock. However, they also have a running back battle with incumbent Melvin Gordon and rookie second-round draft pick Javonte Williams.

Well, Gordon has been nursing a groin injury. Due to that, Williams' number has been called more often. In the Broncos preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings, Williams had five carries for 29 yards. Afterward, Broncos head coach Vic Fangio spoke highly of the rookie. (h/t Zack Kelberman of SI)

“Was anxious to see him because you can look at running backs all you want in practice and they can do good and get better…But ultimately the number one job of a running back is to be able to make people miss or break tackles. And he was able to do that. And you could only find that in a game. So I was really anxious to see him, and obviously he didn’t disappoint.”

The selection of Williams in the NFL Draft always signified the eventual changing of the guard at running back. In his career, he has just one season with more than 1000 yards and missed nine games over the past three seasons.

For now, Williams has made the most of his opportunity and the Broncos are looking at a committee approach at the position. While all eyes are on the quarterback battle, the running back room has a situation of its own to unfold.
