When the Denver Broncos selected Drew Lock in the second round of the NFL Draft back in April, the general consensus was that the Broncos had found their quarterback of the future.

You would never know it by the way head coach Vic Fangio has talked about Lock, as he said during training camp that Lock was not an NFL quarterback yet, and while Lock was getting set to come off the injured reserve list a few weeks ago, Fangio said that it was not “vitally important” for Lock to play in 2019 because you can get a “false positive.”

Well, Lock made his debut in Week 13, completing 18 of his 28 passes for 134 yards, a couple of touchdowns and an interception in a win over the Los Angeles Chargers. He was even more impressive in his second outing on Sunday, going 22-for-27 with 309 yards, three touchdowns and a pick in a victory over the Houston Texans.

But Fangio still isn't ready to anoint Lock or even compliment him much at all.

When asked what Lock's back-to-back strong starts meant for the future, Fangio was non-committal:

“I don’t know, it’s two games,” Fangio said, according to Mike Klis of 9 News. “Who’s long-term right now? He’s done well for two games, that’s about all it is.”

Ouch.

While Fangio is clearly trying to be diplomatic, Lock's first couple of starts were certainly solid, and for a franchise that has not had a stable presence at quarterback since Peyton Manning, it has to be an encouraging feeling going forward.

Denver is 5-8 on the year and will take on the Kansas City Chiefs next weekend.
