Only a few hours removed from leaks suggesting he'd be the fall guy, the Denver Broncos have fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. This is also after the Broncos lost to an objectively ho-hum Cincinnati Bengals team on Sunday.

Quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave was promoted to offensive coordinator to take his place.

Considering Denver's biggest issue is its quarterback play, let's take a moment to giggle at the idea of promoting the position coach of the worst position the team has to offensive coordinator. It would be like Burger King promoting its worst french fry cook to manager just because the manager was also awful at making french fries.

Eh. Something like that. You need not worry about the semantics in the above bad analogy.

McCoy was in the first season back with Denver. It was actually his second stint as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator. He was previously the team's offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2012. After sprinkling some magic dust on a few awful gunslingers, that got him the head-coaching job in San Diego, where he coached the Chargers for the last four years.

Musgrave is also in his first season with the Broncos’ staff, having spent the last two years as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator.

What does all of this mean? Basically, in a roundabout way at least, John Elway and the franchise needed a fall guy. Vance Joseph is only in his first year as a head coach, and the Broncos couldn't admit failure there, so it decided to hurl Mike McCoy under the bus.
