The NFL is still just in the organized team activities portion of its calendar, but the Cleveland Browns are already starting to have issues. This one, however, is harmless, and if anything, only shows the uber-competitive nature of rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield.

According to Pat McManamon of ESPN Mayfield’s self-assessment with regards to his progress with the team does not align with that of Browns head coach Hue Jackson.

“I think he's right on schedule,” Jackson said Tuesday.

“The pace has been a little bit slower than I've really wanted,” Mayfield said.

Although the Browns spent a top pick to get Mayfield, the former Oklahoma Sooner signal-caller is not expected to be the team’s Week 1 starter. Instead, it’s projected to be Tyrod Taylor, whom Cleveland acquired via a trade with the Buffalo Bills back in March. Taylor, however, is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2018 season, so Mayfield remains as the foreseeable quarterback of the future of Cleveland.

Mayfield is currently occupying the third spot in the Browns’ QB depth chart with Taylor and Drew Stanton in front of him.

The 23-year-old Mayfield will eventually get his chance, and he knows he’ll just have to be ready for the time Hue Jackson calls for his number to start.

“I have to be ready for whenever that opportunity comes, if that's this year, next year or in five years,” Mayfield said. “I have to be ready as soon as that comes, and right now, getting better every day. That's all I can do.”
