For nearly the past two decades, it has been nothing short of a merry-go-around of starting quarterbacks for the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns appear to be shaping up their project with Andrew Gribble of clevelandbrowns.com reporting that head coach Hue Jackson has declared that rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer will get the start over Brock Osweiler on Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“This morning, I informed our quarterbacks that DeShone will be our starter for the third preseason game against Tampa. He has made a lot of progress by investing the time necessary to learn our offense, working hard to improve on his fundamentals while also effectively moving the offense in preseason games. Development is so important for a young quarterback, this is the next step he needs to take and he deserves this opportunity. We are very excited about seeing DeShone in the role of starter for this week, as he is certainly positioning himself well to earn the starting job heading into the regular season.

This comes shortly after it was revealed that the Browns are looking to move Osweiler ahead of the start of the regular season. He had drawn the start through the first two preseason games, and it had appeared that Jackson was leaning toward naming him the starter for the season.

That said, the Browns are likely using the preseason game to get a better look at where Kizer is at in his progression this offseason as it's an opportunity for the 21-year-old to show he can perform well against an opposing starting NFL defense. If he struggles in any fashion, Cleveland could still push back their attempt to move Osweiler.

The Browns had selected the former Notre Dame product with the 52 overall pick in the second round of this year's draft. In the first two preseason games, he has completed 19-of-31 passes for 258 yards and a touchdown along with rushing for 47 yards and touchdown. Cleveland has been quite productive with Kizer on the field by scoring 24 points.
