The Cleveland Browns caught a break. Just because they'll be facing the New York Jets on Sunday without Sam Darnold, though, doesn't mean Freddie Kitchens is changing his team's defensive approach.

Journeyman Trevor Siemian will start under center for the Jets in Week 2, a switch that Kitchens is adamant hasn't caused the Browns to alter their game plan whatsoever.

“It was very evident [in Sunday’s 43-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans], we don’t need to worry about who’s playing, who’s not playing,” he said, per Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. “We’re going to prepare like we prepare.”

“Nothing at all [will change]. We’re going to be focused on our preparation during the week the same as we would’ve been before. We’re going to try to get after the quarterback just like we did before. We try to affect the quarterback every way that we can, through coverage, through pressure.”

Darnold missed practice earlier this week with what New York called an illness. Unfortunately for the Jets, it was announced on Thursday that the sophomore signal-caller will be out indefinitely as he deals with mononucleosis.

New York coach Adam Gase, though, stressed the same sentiment as Kitchens.

“Nothing really crazy for us,” he said of potential changes. “The way we have it built, it’s really flexible to where Trevor is good. We thought [Darnold] was sick [Wednesday]. They ran more tests. So with Trevor being able to practice [with the starters Wednesday], that’ll help us.”

Siemian, a five-year veteran, went 13-11 as a starter with the Denver Broncos between 2016 and 2017.
