Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has fit the billing as a former No. 1 overall pick thus far in his young career. As a result, it appears the team could be looking to secure him for the long haul this offseason.

Garrett currently has two more years left on his rookie deal. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Browns have already started negotiations on a potential extension:

Cleveland Browns and Myles Garrett have engaged in contract discussions, per sources, setting the stage for a potential mega-extension this summer.

The prospect of Cleveland ramping up their efforts to secure Garrett hardly comes as a surprise. He earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors in 2018 after recording 13.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 12 tackles for loss. Although a suspension prevented him from building on his success in the 2019 campaign, he has has still emerged into one of the NFL's elite pass rushers after already compiling 30.5 sacks in his first three seasons.

Garrett will likely be looking for a deal that makes him among the highest-paid defensive ends per league. Based on some of the current salaries around the league, this would land him an annual salary in between the $18-20 million range moving forward. It is safe to say that he may very well use the deals signed by Chicago Bears' Khalil Mack ($23.5 million) and Dallas Cowboys' Demarcus Lawrence ($21 million) as the benchmark for his new deal.

Expectations remain as high as ever in Cleveland as they continue to bring in more notable talent on both sides of the ball. They are hoping the new defensive pieces are just what Garrett needs to storm back in the 2020 NFL season.
