Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were dealt a devastating blow when an MRI revealed star wide receiver Chris Godwin tore his ACL in the ugly 9-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday Night Football. The injury initially wasn't believed to be that serious, but further testing showed the true nature of the issue.

Godwin was playing this season on a franchise tag and is set to hit free agency in the offseason. This is a brutal blow for the Buccaneers as a team right now and for Godwin's fortunes ahead of free agency. The Buccaneers wideout took to Instagram with a message after his injury:

While Godwin did his best to put on a brave face with this post, his wife, Mariah, admitted he's devastated by this injury. TMZ Sports has the quotes:

Mariah says he's heartbroken over it all … writing in a statement, “If you know Chris at all you know why this is just gut wrenching.”

“This man loves his team and loves what he does and f***ing LOVES working to be the greatest he can possibly be.”

This truly is a major bummer for Chris Godwin, who was having one of the best seasons of his career when he went down. The Buccaneers star got hurt on a rather controversial hit, with P.J. Williams going low on a tackle. Both Brady and Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians spoke out about the play.

Tampa Bay will have to press on without one of its star wideouts as the franchise looks to repeat as Super Bowl champions. The Buccaneers are 10-4 on the season after their loss to the Saints.
