Jameis Winston is no longer Chris Godwin's quarterback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Godwin is a little shocked his former teammate has yet to be signed by any of the other 31 NFL clubs.

Godwin said it is “evident” Winston has the talent to be successful, but also suggested the strangeness surrounding the coronavirus pandemic and the future of the league year might be impacting Winston's market (via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk):

“Honestly, I’m very surprised,” Godwin said on a conference call with the team’s beat writers. “Like I said, these are weird times right now, and so I think that may be part of it, but I’m very surprised just because I think it’s evident that the talent is there for Jameis. And, in my opinion, I think you’d be hard pressed to find 32 quarterbacks better than him.

“I’m surprised, but I’m confident that he’ll land somewhere, and I know that he’s a tough enough guy that he’ll be ready whenever his opportunity comes.”

Godwin established himself as Winston's favorite target with the Buccaneers in 2019, hauling in 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns while also ranking second among all wideouts in receiving yards per game (95.2).

Winston, meanwhile, had a roller coaster year for the Bucs. He led the NFL in passing yards (5,109) and threw 33 touchdowns, but Winston also tossed a league-high 30 interceptions to go along with 12 fumbles. Tampa Bay went 7-9 and missed the playoffs.

The former No. 1 overall pick finished his Buccaneers' career with a 28-42 record and much to be desired, but he also has his moments of brilliance on the gridiron.

Though it remains to be seen whether any team will give Winston another shot, he has the support of his former teammate.
