New Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is already making waves after leaving the New England Patriots. It didn't take long for the soon-to-be Hall of Famer to engage on some friendly trash talk with New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, always up for a little friendly banter:

“Yeah, Tampa Week 1, though,” Payton told NOLA.com. “We want to quiet the canons. That’s what I text Tom. I said ‘Hashtag keep the canons quiet.’ We’ve known each other for years.”

Payton has played the Buccaneers countless times during his 14 years as a coach of the Saints as a divisional rival, but never quite the way they are now, stacked with an all-time duo in Brady and the unretired Rob Gronkowski.

“I did happen to notice a Tampa Bay practice at a park the other day. I was proud of the Tampa Bay parks and rec team for kicking Tom out.” When asked if he made that call: “Yeah, I've got it on speed dial.”

The new Buccaneers gunslinger tried to keep it friendly, not making much of his new situation in Tampa Bay.

“Oh, he laughs. He says, ‘You guys are the favorites. We’re the underdogs.’ Blah blah blah,” said Payton.

Week 1 will surely be one to watch, however, with two 40-plus-year-old quarterbacks going at it, showing they have aged like fine wine in this game. Drew Brees is coming off another Pro Bowl year, his fourth straight and 11th in the last 12 years. — despite throwing for under 3,000 yards for the first time since 2003 as a member of the San Diego Chargers.

Brady and Payton have known each other for quite a while, despite playing in different conferences for most of their careers. Both are Bay Area-born talents from the San Mateo area who have carved a spot in the NFL history books, hoping to write another chapter once the seasons kicks off with that first matchup in 2020.
