The Chicago Bulls have waived Carmelo Anthony after agreeing to acquire Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot and cash considerations from the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Bulls were forced to open up a roster spot in order to haul in TLC's contract, now allowing Anthony to become a free agent.

Anthony has yet to play since making 10 appearances with the Houston Rockets and being exiled from the roster until he was traded to the Bulls less than two weeks ago.

The Bulls intended to hold onto Anthony to see if there was a team willing to trade for him, but it seems like their best option was to waive him before the trade deadline.

According to Wojnarowski, this was all part of Anthony's plan to allow him to become a free agent once again.

Anthony is expected to clear waivers soon and then have a better sense of a potential destination with a league-wide roster of moving pieces after the trade deadline. The Lakers remain a real possibility for Anthony after the trade deadline has passed.

It's likely the former perennial scorer has to wait a few more days until he joins his next team, which could potentially put him out until past the All-Star break in some circumstances.

The Lakers are in the middle of a maniacally aggressive push to trade for Anthony Davis, which has become their one and one mission for the next week. Anthony could help them, but not any more than a star of Davis' caliber could if added to the roster to finish out the season and bring their playoff hopes some real resonance.
