The Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin left Sunday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs with an upper body injury. Shortly afterward, the Capitals ruled him out for the game, which is not a great sign as the playoffs approach.

Washington entered Sunday's game against the Maple Leafs only two points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for third place in the Metropolitan Division. That's extremely important because if they finish the regular season in fourth, they will likely have to play the Florida Panthers in the first round of the NHL playoffs. That is no enviable task, as the Panthers have the best record in the league and have won 13 straight currently.

During the third period, Ovechkin found himself on a breakaway. Instead of finding the back of the net, his skates found the stick of Toronto's goalie, Erik Kallgren. He tripped over the stick and went hard into the boards. The Capitals long time captain lay on the ice for a couple of minutes, clearly in a lot of pain. He would be helped up and off the ice.

Ovechkin is fourth in the NHL this season with 50 goals. It's truly incredible how consistent of a goal-scorer he has been over the course of his career.

With under a minute remaining in the game, Toronto tied the game 3-3, sending it to overtime, where the game is currently.

Earlier Sunday, the Penguins lost 4-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers. That left the door open for the Capitals to tie them with 101 points with a win. The Capitals also have a game in hand over Pittsburgh.
